Nora Mill Granary

Nora Mill Granary was started in 1876. It was renamed for Governor  Dr. Lamartine G. Hardman,  sister Nora 1902. Nora Mill remained in the Hardman Family until 1998, when it, along with 300 surrounding acres, was purchased by a group of investors associated with Nacoochee Village, Ltd to what we are so blessed to see today.

Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Ron Fain learned the art  of milling from the  Hardman family and leased Nora Mill for him and his parents to bring back to life and operate. Ron became the Miller of Nora Mill. Over the years, Ron worked with his parents until their passing, and then brought his youngest daughter Joann in under his wing to learn the art of milling and work the Nora Mill business with him.

Ron and Joann began to grow the idea of marketing a number of recipes that were unique to Nora Mill. Nora mill is still family run now.

Things change but Nora Mill trues to keep things as close to back in the day. The dam, Raceway and penstock have been rebuilt to make the place to continue to have the special charm that bring people back for more. They have just redone the Machinery as well so if you have not been in awhile you should come and get you some Ice Cream or Porridge.

Cimmi’s Cafe

The Newly remodeled and renovated cafe is  located between the banks of the Chattahoochee River and Smith Creek.

People say Cimmi makes the best biscuits and sandwiches. But that is not all they have, She has daily specials as well

Mully’s Nachoochee Grill

After a long rest, the Nacoochee Grill in Helen has reopened in September 2013 under the administration of Mully, city councilman and long-lasting occupant. The restaurant was Helen’s first to serve something more upscale than the omnipresent schnitzel.

Before , Mully’s Nachoochee Grill was known for its choice of flame broiled fish and steaks presented with Southern sides like collards and heated sweet potatoes. Their housemade nectar balsamic dressing was so great they needed to jug it! They were additionally the first to characteristic wines from neighboring vineyard, Habersham Winery.

Crossroads Cafe

Good Country cooking is not easy to come by.

However at Crossroads Cafe you can chose from some great choices.  Located in Demorest Georgia not to far from Helen. They offers a wide variety of breakfast items from a traditional southern breakfast with grits and gravy to scrumptious omelets to a simple breakfast biscuit or bagel made to order. Lunch you can choose from a cafeteria style hot lunch which changes daily or a grill menu as well as sandwiches made to order. Southern standard like Fried Chicken Mash Potatoes and Banana Budding can be had daily.

Some of the the favorite are the homemade pancakes that were are the taste of Clarkesville winner. The biscuts and gravy just melt in your mouth. People cannot get enough of the Fried Chicken. The lunch buffet has all you can hope for in good southern cooking with daily specials. The food is fresh, hot and tasty.

 

Some of there specialties are the before mentioned pancakes and Fried Chicken. Hamburger Steak and Chicken Tender salad are also Crossroads cafe calling card. Meatloaf like mama use to make is a special people wait for the day it is on the menu.

Did some one say “Banana pudding” Yes Crossroads Cafe is known for it. Desserts are served daily including cobbler and puddings. But you can get Banana pudding everyday.

You will feel right at home at Crossroads cafe the atmosphere is laid back and casual because it is where the locals go to eat good country cooking. You will see people enjoying their meal and having a good time.

Glenda’s is one of the White County most known places to eat. Good county cooking is what Glenda’s is all about. This type of food should be easy to come by in white county but it is not. They have traditional southern breakfast items like biscuits and gravy, Breakfast biscuits with ham, bacon, pork tenderloin. You can get a regular egg breakfast with toast grits and meat. The link sausage is very good. Pancakes are also available too. For lunch you can chose from some great Fried chicken, Country Fried Steak, Burgers and Chicken Tenders. Vegetables include green beans, Macaroni and Cheese and great Mash Potatoes. They are kid friendly with a kids menu for the pickiest of kids. The Salad bar is second to none in white county with all the salad trimming. Hope they will add a few more greens but all the favorites are there like chick peas, little corn, and bacon bits to name a few. All the locals eat at Glenda’s. Some say seats are saved there too. You will experience a local place from the wait staff to Atmosphere and cozy feel.

Hofbrauhaus Restaurant and GI Germany Pub

Hofbrauhaus Restaurant and GI Germany Pub in Helen serves great authentic German food. They have to set the bar high and they do because Helen is known for German food. The rustic feel of the restaurant helps one’s mind believe they are in Germany and the food makes the heart feel it, too. German food is not easy to make right that is why most eat it out a restaurant.  Our Favorite is the pork schnitzel with spatzle it is not overcooked or breaded and very tender. A specialty they have is the Weiner Schnitzel with Spatzle Potato Pancakes with mushroom gravy which goes great with Beringer white Zinfandel and both are very delish. They have the best Schweinshaxen you can find anywhere. The duck is also a great choice if you have fowl in you. For dessert, the Black Forrest cake is great dessert choice as well as their famous apple strudel. You will experience will be truly German but be in Helen. Hofbrauhaus Restaurant and GI Germany Pub prides itself on making its customer leave feeling they have had the ambiance and atmosphere of a true German Restaurant. The beer and wine alone make it a great place to hang out by the river nearby and the feel inside you may dream you are in the Old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

We visit Helen frequently, but had never eaten at the Hofbrauhaus. It is located as you leave town going north we seldom to the north end of town. But, we are glad we did this day! We sat at a picnic table by the stream and totally enjoyed a great meal with a glass or two of wine. The goulash was amazing and I loved the giant pretzel. My wife and I shared a Schnizel entrée and it was fantastic. We dine out often so we will definitely return. From Trip Advisor

Spice 55 can meet your greatest Thai food craving and then some. Spice 55 has all the staples you come to look for and new creations that may become your new Thai favorite. Thai this good is not easy to come by up in North Georgia. Spice 55 Is looking to set the bar high for your Thai Favorites. Our Personal Favorites are Chicken Pad Thai , Massaman Curry, spicy Beef Basil, and the Eruption roll. Some specialties are the Mieng Kim( a Spinach wrap wrapped with Lime, ginger, onions, roasted peanuts and coconut in a caramelized palm sugar sauce). 55 Spring rolls are also great. Rack of Lamb really sticks out and is very tasty. Jumbo Shrimp and Scallops brings the house down. Crispy Duck, Yes Crispy Duck in basil sauce is also very good. You can get all the curries you expect Green, Red, Panang and Massaman. Sushi is also available as well as Thai Noodles and the Standard friend Rice.

The Menu has something for everyone. They have a Sushi Menu as well with Salmon Crunch and California roll. Their famous Eruption, Helen on the Beach (flashed fried), Black Dragon Roll are there if you want to go all out fro some sushi. The also carry Nigiri Sushi/Sashimi which is Sushi sliced Fish with a rice ball. You can also get combinations to try some new sushi as well.

The Rice is all Thai too. The Experience is exactly what you expect from a Thai place even in Helen. The Atmosphere is one you won’t forget: very Genuine and warm. Tables have nice white table cloths great lighting with the special Thai music with the xylophone too. You can get your big spoon here and be ready to eat some amazing Thai at Spice 55.

Cafe Cancun is a family oriented restaurant owned and operated by the Rodriguez/ Diaz family. Cafe Cancun is open 7 days a week, 6 am to 10 pm. They serve have delicious a homemade American and Mexican breakfast. Breakfast is served 6 am to 11 am.  A drive-thru is also provded for those on the go.

Join them Saturday and Sunday for our unlimited breakfast buffet from 7 am to 11 am serving both American and Mexican breakfast. At 11 they serve lunch and dinner menu items.All you can eat breakfast includes biscuits, grits, toast, bacon, sausage, hash browns, eggs, home fries, fruit, breakfast burritos is also there on Saturday.
