As Republican candidates for Georgia Governor Rick Jackson and Burt Jones continue to campaign ahead of a crucial June primary runoff, sheriffs from around the state are throwing endorsements towards both candidates, including some sheriffs in Northeast Georgia.
Recently, Jackson’s campaign announced it had received endorsements from Rabun County Sheriff Mark Gerrells and Pickens County Sheriff Donnie Craig. Jackson also has endorsements from sheriffs in Carroll, Coweta, Evans, Tift, Troup and Whitfield counties.
Jones, meanwhile, has received endorsements from Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith and White County Sheriff Rick Kelley. Jones also has endorsements from sheriffs in Cherokee, Paulding and Walton counties.
Jones received just over 50,000 more votes than Jackson in the May 19 primary election, but neither candidate came close to the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff. Jones ended the May 19 election with 38.36% of the GOP vote, with Jackson receiving 32.51%.
The winner of the June runoff will face the Democratic candidate and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who won the Democratic primary with more than 56% of the vote there. The general election will be in November.
