For the first time since early last year, a case of bird flu has been detected in Georgia.
The state Agriculture Department Friday confirmed a positive case of virus in a non-commercial, backyard (non-poultry) flock in west central Georgia’s Pierce County.
The affected flock—comprised of approximately 60 chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys—has been destroyed as part of standard response protocols to prevent further spread of the highly contagious disease which poses a threat to the state’s $28 billion poultry industry.
