A few halftime thoughts:
- The Bulldogs are four boneheaded penalties away from being ahead in this football game. Ellis Robinson’s pass interference on 3rd and 13 was wholly unnecessary, Colbie Young’s shove out of bounds was even more unnecessary, and Elijah Griffin lining up in the neutral zone was just something that elite football players should know better than to do, even if they are freshmen. I’m just not used to seeing a Kirby Smart football team trying hard to dumb its way out of a competitive football game.
- Gunner Stockton has answered some questions. From the first play of the game when he hit Young in stride down the sideline to the drive culminating in a field goal when he stood in the pocket and delivered, he’s played well enough for the Red and Black to win a tough one on the road with a more crisp second half.
- Pass blocking remains a bit of a mess. But the Bulldog offensive front is firing off better than I expected in the run game. That’s actually helped keep the defense off the field some in the second quarter and get its legs back under itself.
- The Athenians get the ball coming out of the halftime locker room, and a score to make the Vols work from behind would be a very welcome sight for Bulldog fans.
