The Stephens County High School (SCHS) Indians baseball team won the first round of the AA state playoffs Friday night with a doubleheader win over the Ringgold Tigers at The Reservation. The Indians downed the Tigers 6-3 in the first game, and 3-2 in the second game, which lasted 12 innings.
In the first game, Findley Ward pitched seven strong innings, scattered six hits, and struck out 5 as the Indians took a 6-3 win. Ringgold started the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Branson Stowe and Ward knocked in runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game 2-2. The Indians picked up three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Carmelo Renfro topped off the scoring by hitting a home run in the sixth inning.
Ward gave up another Tiger run in the sixth inning but finished strong and got the win. Daniel Easton took the loss for Ringgold.
The second game was the longest game of the year, but well worth the effort as the Indians held on for a 3-2,12-inning victory. Again, Ringgold jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a run in the second inning and a solo home run from Logan Moore in the fourth. Duke Collins and Noah Strickland each knocked in a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning to tie the game.
Noah Strickland gave way to Lane Presley for an inning, followed by Noah Holbrooks who took the Indians into the 12th inning. With the Indians as the visiting team in game 2, Christian Hewitt knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th. Ringgold loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but Holbrooks got the final hitter to fly out to right field to give the Indians the victory.
The Indians will now play the winner of the Morgan County-Butler series. Stay tuned to WNEG for further details of when and where the Indians will play next.
