Memorial Day weather: Flash flooding possible again in North Georgia

Metro Atlanta residents are being urged to stay alert for possible flash flooding as another round of heavy rain and thunderstorms moves into North Georgia.

According to the FOX 5 Atlanta Storm Team, the unsettled pattern that soaked parts of the area over the weekend is expected to continue into the workweek.

Heavy rain Monday, flash flooding possible

Periods of rain and thick cloud cover are expected throughout the day, with the greatest chance for heavier downpours developing during the mid-afternoon and evening hours. The heaviest rain is expected across metro Atlanta and northwest Georgia.

A flood watch has been issued for much of the region, particularly areas from Hall and Forsyth counties through Fulton and Coweta counties and farther north and west. Flash flooding could develop quickly in areas with poor drainage, near creeks and streams, and in other low-lying locations known to flood easily.

Even communities outside the official flood watch area could still see flooding problems if storms repeatedly move over the same location, according to the FOX 5 Atlanta Storm Team. Some areas could receive 2 to 3 inches of rain in less than an hour, while isolated spots may see significantly higher totals. Woodstock saw about 6 inches of rain within a few hours Sunday.

When will rain start?

Scattered showers around midday Monday are expected to organize into a more concentrated line of storms later in the afternoon. The storms are expected to track either south-to-north or southwest-to-northeast, potentially following the Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 corridors through metro Atlanta.

While the rain is expected to remain in motion rather than stall over one location for extended periods, meteorologists cautioned localized flooding is still possible.

The stormy pattern is expected to continue Tuesday and into the middle of the week, bringing additional opportunities for heavy rainfall. Rainfall totals will vary widely depending on where storms repeatedly develop, but some areas could accumulate several inches of rain between now and Wednesday.

Thursday is expected to be the driest day of the workweek, while next Sunday appears to offer the best chance for a break from the wet weather pattern.
