Memorial Day events planned for Gainesville

Gainesville is set to host Memorial Day events over the weekend.

A Memorial Day service will be held on Rock Creek Veterans Park on Sunday, May 24. The event is organized by the Rotary Club of Hall County.

The event will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sloane Guy, MD, will be the guest keynote speaker of the event.

Dr. Guy works for the Northeast Georgia Health System as a cardiothoracic surgeon. He has previously worked at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and served tours as an active-duty U.S. Army trauma surgeon in Afghanistan and in Iraq.

Northside Drive will be closed during the event, but parking will be available at the North Parking Deck on Brenau Avenue.

In addition to the service, the Rotary Club has put out memorial markers on Green Street and Rock Creek Veterans Park to honor those who died while serving the U.S. armed forces.

The American Legion Post 7 will host a Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 25. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church on Green Street.

This annual community tradition honors the personnel who died while serving the country. This year’s parade will also celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary.

The Gainesville Police Department announced several roads will be closed due to the parade starting at 8 a.m. on Monday.
