Amid potential thunderstorms Friday night, outdoor high school graduations are up in the air.
Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Jeremy Williams told AccessWDUN that they are going to move their Friday graduation indoors on Saturday if it is called for lightning beforehand.
If there is lightning during the ceremony, the protocol will be similar to a football game: evacuate the premises and wait for 30-minutes from the last nearby lightning strike to resume.
If resuming is not possible, graduation would be called according to Williams. Golf carts will begin shuttling attendees from parking to City Park at 5 p.m., and gates open at 6 p.m.
This comes as Jefferson High School has moved their graduation indoors. In a Facebook post on Friday, the school said they moved it to the JHS arena on campus.
Doors open for Jefferson at 7 p.m.
“Please remember this was not our first choice, but that our priority is to provide a safe, high-quality ceremony for our students that will provide them with a memorable capstone to their time in high school. Everyone is going to work together to make this a wonderful evening to remember,” the high school said in their post.
Jefferson will also be streaming their graduation, with it available at this link or the YouTube video below.
