A Gainesville man was charged with felony aggravated assault and theft by taking a motor vehicle in connection to a domestic incident on Sept. 23.
Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies reportedly responded to a residence on Tulip Drive just before 7 p.m. to investigate the domestic dispute.
An initial investigation determined a female victim was backing out of the driveway of the residence when Kevin Lee Mata, 36, appeared at the top of the driveway with a handgun. Mata then allegedly fired three rounds in the direction of the victim’s vehicle.
The victim then exited her vehicle. Mata reportedly grabbed the victim by the neck and threw her to the ground. According to HCSO, the victim sustained visible scrapes on her palms and knees.
Mata is also believed to have grabbed the victim’s phone and car keys, driving away in her vehicle.
Mata was not at the scene when authorities responded to the residence. The victim’s vehicle was located just before 10 p.m. on Athens Street in Gainesville. The suspect was not with the vehicle when it was found.
Deputies obtained warrant arrests for Mata on the felony charges, as well as misdemeanor charges of simple battery under the Family Violence Act (FVA), obstruction of a 911 call and theft by taking (for the cell phone).
Mata was taken into custody at the Franklin County Jail on Sept. 29 and was brought to the Hall County Jail. As of last report, he remained in custody on a bond of $10,900.
