There were a number of State House and State Senate seats in Northeast Georgia that were the subject of contested primary races Tuesday night.
Here is a district-by-district recap of the results (NOTE: Races that did not have contested primaries are not listed):
State Senate:
District 5 (Gwinnett County):
Incumbent State Senator Sheikh Rahman won his re-election bid, defeating Democratic challenger Robin Emilia McCoy with 54.49% of the vote.
No Republican qualified for the seat.
District 7 (Gwinnett County):
In the race to replace Democrat Nabilah Parkes, two Democratic candidates will advance to the June 16 runoff election. Ruwa Romman took 38.22% of the Democratic primary vote, with Rahul Garabadu finishing second with 33.21% of the vote.
Republican candidate Aizaz Shahbaz Shaikh has advanced to the November general election, as he did not face any primary opposition.
District 27 (Forsyth County):
Mike Dudgeon won the Republican primary in the race to replace GOP State Senator Greg Dolezal. Dudgeon took 54.9% of the Republican primary vote.
Only one Democrat qualified for the seat, with Jennifer Roper advancing unchallenged to the November general election.
District 46 (Barrow, Clarke, Gwinnett, Oconee and Walton counties):
With Republican Bill Cowsert leaving this seat to run for Georgia Attorney General, the GOP primary will head to a runoff in June. Marc McMain took 43.33% of the GOP primary vote, with Doug McKillip finishing second with 34.65% of the vote.
On the Democratic side of the ballot, Ray Smith won the primary with 59.86% of the vote, defeating William Gaulden.
District 47 (Barrow, Clarke, Jackson and Madison counties):
Republican State Senator Frank Ginn won his primary for his re-election bid, with a narrow 51.01% of the vote to edge out GOP challenger Jason Black.
One Democrat qualified for the seat, with Justin Gillespie advancing unchallenged to the November general election.
District 48 (Forsyth, Fulton and Gwinnett counties):
Republican incumbent Shawn Still went unchallenged in the GOP primary, although there was a contested Democratic primary for the seat.
In that race, Laura Murvartian won with 63.71% of the vote, defeating Nathan Hombroek.
District 51 (Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Pickens, Union and White counties):
Three Republican candidates were running for this seat to replace GOP State Senator Steve Gooch, who vacated the seat to run for Georgia Lieutenant Governor. The Republican primary will now head to a runoff, with State House Representative Will Wade taking 42.67% of the primary vote, and Philip Milam taking 41.14%.
One Democrat, Gary St. Lawrence, qualified for the race.
State House:
District 9 (Dawson, Lumpkin and White counties):
In the Republican race to replace Will Wade, Chris Dockery won with 53.27% of the vote.
Dockery will face Democrat Roger L. Smith in the November general election. Smith was the lone Democrat to qualify for the seat.
District 25 (Fulton and Forsyth counties):
Incumbent Republican Todd Jones won his primary with an overwhelming 87.53% of the vote over Mathew Philip.
There was also a contested Democratic primary, with Elaine Padgett winning 78.8% of the vote over Metin Vargonen.
District 29 (Hall County):
Incumbent Republican Matt Dubnik won a contested GOP primary for his re-election bid, taking 86.88% of the vote over challenger Cody Scott Ewing.
Dubnik will face Democrat Scott Soracco in the November general election, after Soracco was the only Democrat to qualify.
District 99 (Gwinnett County):
Incumbent Matt Reeves did not face any Republican primary opposition as he seeks re-election.
He will, however, face a challenge from Democrat Michelle Kang in the November general election. Kang defeated Shelly John Abraham in the Democratic primary, taking 71.50% of the vote.
District 100 (Forsyth, Gwinnett, Hall counties):
With incumbent Republican David Clark leaving the seat to run for Georgia Lieutenant Governor, his brother, fellow Republican Josh Clark, won the GOP primary for the seat, taking 78.51% of the vote over Edwin Duncan.
Josh Clark will face Democrat Jennifer Ambler in November, after Ambler was the only Democrat to qualify.
District 120 (Barrow, Clarke, Jackson and Oconee counties):
Gary “Ward” Black, Jr. won the Republican primary over Chad Paton with 58.36% of the vote. Black, Jr. will look to replace Republican Houston Gaines, who left the seat to run for 10th District U.S. Congress.
Black, Jr. will face Democrat Suzanna Karatassos in the November general election. Karatassos was the only Democrat to qualify for the seat.
