A recent AJC report shows that driving without a license is the most common underlying reason most immigrants who were turned over to ICE from county jails in Hall, Gwinnett and Whitfield counties end up in federal custody.
In Hall County, nearly 400 immigrants were booked into the county jail during January, February, and March, the publication reported. Eighty-six of them were arrested for driving without a license. DUI was the second most common reason.
In Gwinnett, 529 out of 1,621 immigrants arrested during the same period were found to be driving without a license while in Whitfield County (Dalton) 41 of 110 detainees were locked up for that reason.
Meantime, as of early this morning, a check of the roster of inmates being held in the Hall County Jail by 97.5 Glory FM showed 76 were being held for immigration authorities. That’s out of an inmate population of 709 at the time.
