A high national seed in hand, Georgia now knows more about the roadblocks in its way when it comes to a trip to Omaha and the College World Series.
As expected, the Diamond Dawgs were highly rewarded on Monday for sweeping the SEC regular season and tournament titles, being awarded a No. 3 overall national seed.
Liberty and Boston College will begin the Athens Regional on Friday afternoon prior to Georgia hosting Long Island in a 7 p.m. contest. The winner of the weekend’s double-elimination regionals will advance to face the winner of the Starkville Regional in a best-of-three super regional next weekend. What that means is simple for Georgia – that Foley Field will host both regionals and next weekend’s super regionals should the Dawgs advance.
If the Bizarro Dogs, seeded 14th nationally, win that regional,‘ it’d be the fifth matchup of the year between Georgia and MSU with the Dawgs winning all four times so far.
Of those teams, Liberty could have the argument of being the most dangerous to Georgia with the Flames being Conference USA runner-up and boasting an RPI of 32 that’s just below that of Miami and Tennessee…and two spots above the regional’s No. 2 seed, Boston College.
Liberty will be used to the spotlight, having lost two-of-three this season to national-seed West Virginia and has also played ACC teams such as Duke, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Wake Forest. Liberty has made eight NCAA regional appearances in its history, advancing to the regional final twice.
Georgia’s the highest seed among all SEC teams. As expected the selection committee again highly regarded the rigor of the SEC, as the Dawgs are one of five national seeds from the SEC. Those other teams are Auburn, Texas, Alabama, and Florida.
