The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents and business owners about an increase in counterfeit $20 bills circulating throughout the community.

Authorities are encouraging citizens to remain alert when handling cash transactions and urging local businesses to inspect all bills received during purchases or while providing change to customers.

Officials say anyone who suspects they have received counterfeit currency should avoid attempting to use it or pass it to someone else. Instead, residents are advised to immediately contact the Sheriff’s Office so investigators can properly examine the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to monitor the situation and asks the public to report any suspicious activity regarding counterfeit money.
