A train has derailed in far northeastern Hall County, blocking at least one area roadway.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Thursday afternoon, May 21, that a Norfolk Southern train struck a tractor-trailer on the tracks at Yonah Road near Old Cornelia Highway just north of Lula.
A report from the Georgia State Patrol said the truck was hauling a lowboy trailer carrying an excavator when it became stuck at the rail crossing on Yonah Road.
“Driver…stated he was crossing the railroad tracks when his Low Boy [sic] bottomed out,” the report from the state patrol said. “(The driver) said he tried to raise the trailer to clear the tracks, but the hydraulics would not engage.”
The driver was reportedly out of the truck when the collision happened, but suffered minor injuries and was taken from the scene to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
The collision also caused the train to derail.
“The train then derailed causing three engines and eight (cars) to leave the tracks and overturn,” a statement from the Banks County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said the following roads are blocked:
-The northbound lane of Old Cornelia Highway near Yonah Road
-The southbound lane of Old Cornelia Highway at the Hall-Habersham county line
-Yonah Road’s rail crossing
-Moccasin Gap Road’s rail crossing
-Barrett Road’s rail crossing
-8th Street’s rail crossing in Lula
The Georgia State Patrol and Norfolk Southern Railroad are investigating the crash.
