A train has derailed in far northeastern Hall County, blocking at least one area roadway.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Thursday afternoon, May 21, that a Norfolk Southern train struck a tractor-trailer on the tracks at Yonah Road near Old Cornelia Highway just north of Lula.

The Banks County Sheriff’s Office said the truck, which was hauling an excavator tractor, was on the tracks at the crossing when it was hit.

“The train then derailed causing three engines and eight [cars] to leave the tracks and overturn,” a statement from the Banks County Sheriff’s Office said.

The driver of the truck reportedly suffered minor injuries and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said the following roads are blocked:

-The northbound lane of Old Cornelia Highway near Yonah Road
-Yonah Road’s rail crossing
-Moccasin Gap Road’s rail crossing
-Barrett Road’s rail crossing
-8th Street’s rail crossing in Lula

The Georgia State Patrol and Norfolk Southern Railroad are investigating the crash.

This story will be updated as more details become available.
