State Superintendent to go to runoff for Republican nomination

The current State School Superintendent will go to a runoff against a southeast Georgia superintendent for the Republican nomination.

For a statewide race, Richard Woods was 972 votes away from avoiding a runoff. Instead, he got 49.89% of the vote, forcing the runoff against Candler County Schools Superintendent Dr. Fred “Bubba” Longgrear.

Longgrear got 29.1% of the vote in the five person field. AccessWDUN asked each candidate about pressing issues including the Promise Scholarship, school safety, and funding back in April of this year.

The most important thing for the State Superintendent since 2014 is to continue the work his office has been doing.

“We have seen great growth … especially when you get to the high school level, we’re beating the national average on SAT, ACT … our highest scores are actually in literacy and reading,” Woods said. “One candidate is a sitting superintendent, he doesn’t talk about his reading scores and there’s a reason for that.”

Longgrear says he has three primary platform points.

“Enhancing school safety … enhancing literacy outcomes for students in Georgia … career development opportunities,” Longgrear said. “We’re not only pushing to get kids to graduate from high school, but truly setting them up with a plan for success beyond graduation.”

The runoff will be June 16. The winner will face Democrat and educator of over 26-years Dr. Lydia Powell in the Nov. 3 general election.
