*Heavy traffic detoured through many Atlanta communities over the weekend due to the start of a major reconstruction of I-285 which necessitated a complete closure of one section of the road. Although the work was completed early Monday morning as planned, restaurant employees reported a decline in customers, leading to lost earnings during the shutdown. It was just the beginning of a three-year project which means more weekend shutdowns in the future.
*Georgia is now connected to a salmonella outbreak that had affected nearly 200 people nationwide at last report. The CDC reports that four cases have been identified from Georgia.
*Georgia officials have launched a new trust fund for historic preservation, following the passing of the Vince Dooley Battlefield Trust Fund Act last year. The program provides grants to preserve and protect Georgia’s historic battlefield lands. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources announced that the program is now operational and will offer matching grants to acquire or protect qualifying historic battlefield properties across the state. WTOC reports funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, covering up to 50% of the land’s appraised value, with applicants required to provide a one-to-one funding match. Interested organizations can find more information and apply for grants online.
*The Georgia Department of Education and Georgia Statewide Afterschool Network are expanding the BOOST grant program with a $5 million private investment from the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation and an additional $2.5 million in state funding. Savannah-C-E-O-dot-com reports that BOOST program grants help community-based organizations provide enrichment programs that support Georgia students’ academic skills and the whole child. The program, originally funded by the American Rescue Plan, has been sustained with state funding.
