A Duluth man was arrested Wednesday after police said he shot and killed a dog that was caught in a trap at his home.
The Gwinnett County Police Department said they were called to a home on Citrus Drive off of Davenport Road Wednesday by a “local animal trapper.”
“The homeowner stated he shot a dog that had been captured in one of his traps,” the police department said.
Gwinnett County Animal Control confirmed that the animal that had been shot was a Husky.
The homeowner, Richard Beatty Hart, age 78, told officers he shot the dog because it had been chasing his cats. He was arrested on a list of charges including aggravated cruelty to animals, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
He was released from the Gwinnett County Jail on bond Thursday morning.
“Animal Control Officers strongly advise against approaching a trapped domesticated animal,” the police department said. “Instead, they recommend contacting 911 or the Gwinnett County non-emergency line at 770-513-5700 to ensure the animal is safely and professionally removed.”
