The State Duals Championships for GHSA took place last weekend. Here are the local teams that participated and how they fared.
COMMERCE
The Tigers finished 3rd in state after beating Gordon Lee in the 3rd-place match by a 41-34 final. Commerce started the tournament with a 53-21 win over McIntosh County Academy, then beat Trion 37-36 in a tight battle. Social Circle, the eventual Champs, beat Commerce 68-12 after that. Once in the consolation bracket, Commerce beat Bremen 38-33, then Gordon Lee to finish it off.
DAWSON COUNTY
Dawson County made a good run at state. The Tigers first beat Howard 64-18, then downed Calhoun 43-20 before dropping one to eventual State RU Troup County 57-15. In the consolation bracket, the Tigers lost to White County 38-31.
FRANKLIN COUNTY
The Lions won their opening match against Appling County 69-5, but lost to Columbus 49-26 to get tossed to the consolation bracket. Franklin then lost to Sonoraville to end their run at state.
HABERSHAM CENTRAL
Hab Central dropped its opener to Creekview, the eventual State Champions, 69-11. The Raiders then got edged out o Brunswick in the consolation round.
JEFFERSON
The Dragons won the state title! This is old hat for Jefferson, but truly it never gets old. Jefferson won over Mary Persons 73-6 in the first round, beat White County 71-6 in the second, then Gilmer County 61-15 before defeating Troup County 57-21 to claim the big trophy.
WHITE COUNTY
The Warriors had a 4th-place run at state. First, White County beat Stephenson 6711, then lost to champs Jefferson 71-6. In the loser’s bracket, the Warriors rebounded well with a win of 52-27 over Mt. Zion, then 40-29 over West Laurens, followed by a win over rivals Dawson County 38-31. They dropped the 3rd-place match to Gilmer, 44-31.
