The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Northeast Georgia, with snowfall expected in the far northern counties of the state.

The NWS Peachtree City office issued the advisory Monday afternoon, Nov. 10, with the advisory being in effect through Tuesday morning. The advisory is in place for Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Towns, Union, Fannin and Gilmer counties.

Maps issued by the NWS indicate that snowfall totals should mostly be less than one inch, but some of the higher elevations in the area could see up to two or even three inches of snow by Tuesday morning.

“Snow will end after midnight, but slick spots may linger Tuesday morning,” a statement from the NWS Monday afternoon said. “Plan on slippery road conditions and use caution while traveling in these areas.”

In response to the advisory, school systems in Dawson, White, Fannin and Gilmer counties announced that they would be releasing students early to ensure no one is impacted by potentially dangerous road conditions. Those systems have also cancelled extracurricular activities for Monday afternoon and evening.

While snowfall is only expected to impact the North Georgia mountains, below-freezing temperatures are expected throughout the state overnight Monday into Tuesday morning. Low temperatures in the early morning hours of Tuesday are expected to dip into the mid-to-low-20s across the region. Wind gusts are also expected to reach anywhere from 20 to 40 miles per hour.

The Gwinnett County Government announced Monday that it would open its warming stations across the county to allow those in need to seek shelter from the cold. The stations will be open from 6:00 p.m. Monday through 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Locations of those warming stations can be found on the county’s website.
