White County Parks and Recreation was recognized with top honors at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s (GRPA) District 7 Awards Banquet held on Wednesday at the new Recreation Center at Yonah Preserve.
The annual event brought together parks and recreation leadership from across District 7, which encompasses the northeast corner of Georgia.
White County Parks and Recreation was named Agency of the Year in the 20,001 to 30,000 population category, marking a significant achievement for the department. During the presentation, Manda Groff, Awards Committee Representative for GRPA, commended White County Parks and Recreation for their commitment not only to recreation, but also to overall community wellness.
The department was recognized for its continued growth in youth programs and activities, as well as for the completion of its new two-court gymnasium and splash pad at Yonah Preserve, noting that it provides recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
Kimberly McEntire, Director of White County Parks and Recreation, accepted the award alongside department staff.
“We are deeply honored to be recognized as Agency of the Year. This award represents the dedication of our staff, the support of county leadership, and the spirit of a community that values recreation and wellness,” McEntire said. “We’re excited to continue expanding the programs that make White County a great place to live and play.”
White County Parks and Recreation also celebrated an individual achievement during the event, as Barry Vandiver was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for programs serving populations between 20,001 and 30,000. Vandiver was honored for outstanding contributions to the HEROES Program, which provides recreational opportunities for children with special needs in a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment.
White County Administration and members of the White County Board of Commissioners were in attendance to support the department and celebrate the award.
“These awards highlight the dedication of our staff and volunteers who make up White County Parks and Recreation,” said Travis Turner, White County Board of Commissioners Chairman. “We are proud of the progress made and the impact these efforts have on our community.”
