A vehicle reportedly hit a bear in Habersham County on Thursday, and authorities are advising the public to avoid potential contact with the animal.

The Baldwin Police Department issued a statement Thursday afternoon, October 30, saying the collision happened on Ga. 365 near Kudzu Hill Drive, between the Level Grove Road and Duncan Bridge Road intersections.

“The bear was injured in the crash but survived,” Baldwin Police said. “Officers attempted to locate the bear in the area but were unable to find it.”

The animal reportedly fled through the woods towards the B.C. Grant Road area. Police advised residents to avoid the animal if it is seen.

“If you live in that area, please be aware the bear is injured and would most likely be more aggressive than normal if approached,” police said. “Please do not leave pets or children outside unattended in the area.”

Anyone who sees the bear is asked to contact Habersham County Dispatch by calling 706-778-3911.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office also posted to social media Thursday afternoon, advising residents in the Baldwin and Alto areas to use caution if they encounter the bear.
