A University of Georgia football player and his mother were arrested after allegedly fleeing police at high speeds in Commerce Sunday morning.

A report from the Commerce Police Department said the incident started when an officer tried to stop a grey Nissan Rogue for failing to stop at the stop sign on State Street at North Broad Street just before 8:00 a.m.

“While calling out my traffic stop a white BMW came by me and accelerated to over 100mph in a 25mph zone,” the report from the arresting officer said. “I activated my lights and attempted to stop the vehicle. The white BMW did not stop.”

The officer then pursued the BMW, with the chase continuing up North Broad Street onto Old Maysville Road. Eventually, the suspect led police onto Maysville Road before entering Interstate 85 Southbound, where officers lost sight of the vehicle.

While the chase was happening, the Nissan Rogue that initially ran the stop sign was reportedly blocking another responding officer from joining the pursuit.

“The subject in the Nissan Rogue was the mother of the suspect in the BMW,” the report said. “The mother was identified as Brandi Canada-Green…Brandi was on the phone with her son, Nyier Daniels, and instructed him to return to the residence.”

Daniels, age 19, is a redshirt-freshman offensive lineman for the University of Georgia’s football team. Commerce police then contacted the UGA football coaching staff for assistance in the case.

“Coaching staff was able to assist me and was able to locate Nyier and his vehicle,” the report said. “Coaching Staff then brought Nyier and his vehicle to Commerce PD.”

Daniels reportedly told police that he started the pursuit in an attempt to prevent Canada-Green from being ticketed.

“Nyier seemed not to care about the situation that he had put himself in or the fact that he endangered the lives of his 2 younger siblings,” the report said.

Daniels was arrested on charges including fleeing, second-degree cruelty to children, reckless driving and various other traffic citations, including failure to stop at a stop sign and driving on the wrong side of the roadway. Canada-Green, age 41, was arrested on charges of obstruction, fleeing, speeding and reckless driving.

Daniels, originally from New Jersey, has appeared in four games over his two years with the Bulldogs, including three this season, most recently in the team’s 35-3 win over Charlotte on Saturday.
