The Towns County Sheriff’s Office says it has learned of missing evidence and county-owned equipment and property in a recent audit.

The sheriff’s office posted to social media Monday morning, December 8, that an audit of its evidence room was conducted by the Banks County Sheriff’s Office. Towns County officials conducted the inventory of their equipment and government property.

The inventory and audit were done as the sheriff’s office continues to navigate under the interim leadership of Anthony Coleman, as Sheriff Ken Henderson remains suspended, facing an indictment for a December 2024 incident involving a Hiawassee Police Officer.

“Over the past two weeks, the Towns County Sheriff’s Office has remained hard at work as we continue the assumption of office and strengthen operations across every division,” the sheriff’s office said Monday. “We are actively investigating these discrepancies and will provide updates as appropriate. Accountability and transparency remain top priorities.”

No other details on the items reported missing from the inventory and audit have been released.

The sheriff’s office added that it is conducting facility inspections and rehabilitating portions of the county jail to improve what it called “long-standing maintenance and safety concerns.”
