NEED TO KNOW
- A teen spent $50 to make a meal for their friends, cooking for most of the day
- The meal turned out delicious, but when they went to get leftovers, the food was gone
- After learning their mom threw away the meal, they turned to Reddit for advice
Sharing a fridge with another person can be hard, as groceries get mixed up, leading to questions about who contributed what.
On Reddit, an 18-year-old explained that they recently “made some damn good food” for a few of their friends. However, when they woke up the next morning, they couldn’t “find the food in the fridge.”
When they asked their family, they were shocked to learn their mom had thrown all the leftovers away.
“I ask my mom if she’s seen it, and she says she threw it away. I think she’s joking, so I ask her where it is, and she says in the trash,” they wrote.

“I check, and there it is: my truffle chilli, my garlic bread(surprisingly complicated recipe), and the Midwest style Fettuccine Alfredo,” they continue. “I spent $50 of my own money on ingredients, and it took me almost 7 hours to make all this.”
The reason, they explained in an edit, was that their mom thought they used her ingredients.
“The reason she says she threw it out was cuz she thought I used her ingredients, and there has been a couple occasions where I’ve made food with her ingredients and not finished the leftovers,” they wrote.
People in the comments section were sympathetic, but also suggested they check in to make sure everything is okay with their mom.

“I don’t want to sound rude or anything, but I think you should check on your mother’s mental health. Even if she truly thought it was her ingredients, it is still absolutely insane to just throw the food away,” one user replied.
In another update to the post, they noted that their mom apologized and “said she’s just had a really rough week and wasn’t thinking clearly cuz of the meds” from a recent surgery.
“She’s never done anything like this before,” they wrote, noting “she’s not a bad mom.” They also shared that she paid them back for the ingredients and “another 50 for the time I spent on it.”
“Judging by your comments, it looks like you should be more concerned about her state of mind than the food,” another person commented under the post.
