Spalding County officials have issued a “do not consume” water advisory for the entire county.

The Spalding County Water Authority said the advisory was issued as a precaution following a fuel spill at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport that reached the Flint River on Friday. Despite the City of Griffin shutting off its water intake at the river, the county is still urging residents not to drink, cook with, or brush their teeth using tap water.

The city has collected multiple water samples, including from consumers’ taps, and sent them for laboratory testing. Officials emphasized that boiling the water will not make it safe to consume. Residents are advised to use bottled water until an all-clear is given.

Any taste or odor issues should be reported to the City of Griffin Water and Wastewater Department at 770-229-6423, or by calling the city’s after-hours line at 770-229-6406 and pressing 6 for assistance with water management.

Griffin issued a warning on Friday but briefly canceled it after shutting off the river intake. City leaders discussed the timeline and the safety steps they have taken during a meeting Tuesday outside the Flint River Pump Station.
