COLUMBUS, Ga. – Bayleigh Gennaro’s walk-off single scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Pickens past North Hall, 3-2, on Friday in the GHSA Elite 8 tournament at the South Commons Softball Complex.
After losing to Lafayette on Thursday, the Trojans faced Region 6-3A foe Pickens, who they split with in the regular season, to keep their Class 3A championship hopes alive in the losers’ bracket of the tournament.
But it was Gennaro’s clutch hit in the bottom of the seventh that crushed the Trojans’ title hopes, and capped a back-and-forth battle that featured two impressive pitching performances.
Kendra Stewart went the distance for the Dragonettes (20-8), striking out eight while allowing just two runs on seven hits. North Hall’s Crumley was just as good, going six and one-third innings and surrendering only one earned run on two hits while striking out five.
Pickens broke the 0-0 tie in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Ainsley Jones and held the lead until North Hall (24-8) rallied ahead in the sixth. Hadleigh Crumley and Kinley Shuler each delivered RBI hits to put the Trojans in front 2-1.
The Dragonettes answered in the bottom half when River Becker’s sacrifice fly tied it at two.
Crumley led North Hall at the plate with two hits, while Shuler added an RBI double. Weaver swiped two of North Hall’s four stolen bases.
Gennaro and Makenna Moody had Pickens’ only hits, while Becker, Jones, and Gennaro each drove in a run as the Nettes advanced in the Elite 8 tournament in Columbus.
