HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Habersham County first responders teamed up Wednesday for hands-on training with Habersham EMC. The session focused on how to stay safe around downed power lines — a crucial skill as storms and high winds return to the region.

Collaborative preparation for emergencies

The training drew broad participation from across the county, including members of Habersham County Public Works, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, and several city fire departments. Together, participants reviewed critical safety measures to protect both first responders and the public.

The session covered how to secure areas around downed lines, the importance of maintaining a safe distance from energized hazards, and the proper steps for notifying Habersham EMC when a line is discovered.

‘Assume every line is energized’

Habersham EMC trainers reinforced one essential rule throughout the day: never touch a power line.

“You should always assume the line is energized and dangerous, even if it doesn’t appear to be ‘hot,’” one trainer cautioned.

Participants viewed real-life photos and videos demonstrating the devastating consequences of high-voltage contact and learned how electricity can travel through nearby objects, creating unseen dangers.

Commitment to community safety

County officials praised the joint training as a model of interagency cooperation and proactive public service. By investing time and resources into this coordinated effort, Habersham County’s emergency teams say they are strengthening their readiness to respond swiftly and safely during severe weather events.
