Police say a pedestrian was hit and killed by a commuter train in Gainesville Tuesday morning.

The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) posted to social media just after 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, that the pedestrian was hit by an Amtrak train at the Athens Street rail crossing on the southeast side of the city. No other details about the incident, including the victim’s name, were released.

“The early findings determined that an adult female was on the tracks when an Amtrak train came through, struck that individual, killing them on the tracks,” GPD spokesman Kevin Holbrook said.

Holbrook added that the individual, who was known to frequent the area and possible part of the unhoused community, is having her identity withheld until next-of-kin are notified and an autopsy is completed.

“The train conductors advised that they observed the individual, attempted to alert them, but weren’t able to stop and struck the individual,” Holbrook said. “This was an active commuter train, it did have a number of passengers on it. They did work with us through the investigation.”

The incident left the area of Athens Street between Mill Street and Purina Drive closed for part of Tuesday morning’s commute, but police indicated that the roadway was reopened at 9:45 a.m.

This story will be updated as more details become available.
