New England Patriots player Jahlani Tavai’s family is grieving a loss.
On Thursday, Dec. 11, the linebacker’s partner Kalei Mau shared an emotional post on Instagram and revealed she’d spent six days in a coma in the hospital due to a rare blood infection. Due to her organs failing and the infection affecting her placenta, their unborn baby died in utero. Tavai and Mau’s daughter was expected to join their family this coming March.
“This is not the way I wanted to announce my second pregnancy but I was 6 months pregnant with another beautiful baby girl,” Mau began her post, writing over a picture of herself, Tavai and their daughter Honua. She could be seen holding up a series of sonogram images.
“We were expecting to welcome her into our Ohana in March 2026,” she continued. “But I got an extremely rare blood infection and on November 20 I was placed in a medically induced coma after I was found unresponsive in my bed. I was asleep for 6 days.”
