A Mexican national has pleaded guilty for allegedly assaulting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Commerce.
According to the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Theodore S. Hertzberg’s office, 41-year-old Ricardo Trejo-Martinez shoved a deportation officer into oncoming traffic.
“All law enforcement officers must be allowed to perform their duties free from violent attacks,” Hertzberg said. “My office will prosecute anyone who assaults a federal officer in this district.”
In court, it was revealed that the incident occurred on May 20 of this year. At the time, an ICE officer conducted a stop in Commerce to execute an administrative arrest warrant for an undocumented immigrant.
Trejo-Martinez was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and allegedly refused to comply with the officer’s requests to identify himself. Once outside, Trejo-Martinez allegedly shoved the ICE officer into the four-lane highway where vehicles were passing.
Trejo-Martinez was indicted on July 1 of this year. Sentencing has been scheduled for Jan. 20 of next year.
