In one of the closest races of Tuesday night’s municipal elections in Northeast Georgia, Trey McPhaul won the Gainesville Board of Education District 2 seat.
McPhaul narrowly defeated Amy McKinney Kerr, winning 50.76% of the vote, just an 11-vote margin.
McPhaul is a local business owner whose children attend Gainesville City Schools. He said improving equitable access to learning opportunities would be a top priority for him.
“I think we have so many programs and things that exist currently and could be brought to the forefront,” McPhaul said in an interview prior to the election. “I think we just want to continue to make those things accessible to all the students in our school system.”
McPhaul will fill the seat left vacant by Kris Nordholz, who resigned in June as he planned to move out of the school district.
