A tired but clearly cheerful Kirby Smart met the assembled media after Georgia’s 35-10 win over Texas and was asked about precisely the things you would have expected following that game. Among other topics on the Top Dawg’s agenda:
- The onside kick. Kirby gave a little color to the decision to gamble on that onside kick. It sounds like part of the thought process was just not wanting to kick it to explosive kick returner Ryan Niblett and watch him run through a hole an 18 wheeler could’ve cleared.
- How the onside kick cleared the way for the patented Kirby Smart anaconda offense. It was clear to anyone watching that the game was all but over after the onside recovery. As Kirby points out, that’s a crushing situation for a defense, and even a very good Texas defense was obviously not the same after spending most of the fourth quarter on the field and on its heels.
- Those two 4th down conversions, including the second one which is it turns out Kirby Smart had no intention of trying to convert. It was but one example of penalties killing a Texas team that has struggled with them all season long.
- The steady emergence of Quintavius Johnson.
- A nugget of Kirby Smart, defensive theory: why the best third down pass rush is actually playing the run well on first and second down.
- An update of sorts on CJ Allen.
- What was the deal with Brett Thorson?
- A big night for native Texans like Noah Thomas and Cash Jones.
And a whole lot more. As always, our sincere thanks to our good friends at Bulldawg Illustrated for the use of their high quality video. Be sure to check them out for Bulldog news that’s timely, wide-reaching, and entertaining.
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
