As Laura Dern says, she, George Clooney and Adam Sandler have bonded as a family after working together on their new movie.
Before Dern, 58, took the stage at InStyle‘s second annual Imagemaker Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday, Oct. 23 to accept the night’s Woman of Impact award, Clooney, 64, and Sandler, 59, stepped out to surprise Dern, praising her as “one of the best actresses to ever grace the stage or screen.”
“I mean, that was the greatest award anybody’s ever gotten ever,” Dern said when accepting the award. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m so excited you’ve met my family – my literal brothers, my new adopted family Adam, and my family of yes, it’s true, 40 years, George Clooney.”
As Dern noted in her speech, she and Sandler portray Clooney’s onscreen publicist and manager in Jay Kelly, which follows an aging movie star (Clooney) who takes a trip across Europe to reflect on his life. She also shouted out her costars’ wives Jackie Sandler and Amal Clooney and touted the close friendships she has created with their families.
“I want to thank Adam and George for being the best leading men any girl could ever know in the world,” Dern said. “I want to thank Adam Sandler and George Clooney for marrying the most amazing women I’ve ever met in my life. So that by proxy, as cool as they may be, I get to hang out with the most incredible women, being Amal and Jackie, and we’ve become this amazing family.”

Sandler had called out his family’s love for Dern, whom he affectionally referred to as “the Dern-o,” throughout his introduction. “Her kids love her, my kids love her, my wife loves her, George loves her, I love her, America loves her,” he said. “Noah Baumbach loves her, Thomas Edison would have loved her if she was around in those days — dare I say, there would have been electricity.”
The trio of stars feature in Jay Kelly alongside Billy Crudup, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Riley Keough, Emily Mortimer, Isla Fisher, Patrick Wilson, Nicôle Lecky, Thaddea Graham, Jim Broadbent, Eve Hewson, Alba Rohrwacher, Lenny Henry, Josh Hamilton and Baumbach’s wife Greta Gerwig.
In announcing Dern as the recipient of the Woman of Impact award, InStyle previously wrote: “Since the dawn of Hollywood, countless female actors have fallen victim to typecasting, relegated to the ditzy blonde, the femme fatal, the girl next door. Laura Dern has long defied that fate. Guided by sharp instinct and strong conviction, she has built a career on portraying complex women before it was fashionable, proving to audiences and studios alike why they should follow her lead.”
