Jackson County elections officials say there are still 18 provisional ballots yet to be counted in the county, a number that could loom large with multiple races Tuesday night being decided by a single vote.

The Jackson County Elections and Registration Office confirmed Wednesday afternoon that 18 provisional ballots have yet to be verified and counted. It is unclear in what precincts those ballots were cast or if all 18 will be eligible to be counted.

The ballots could prove significant, however, as municipal races in Jefferson and Pendergrass were decided by a single vote each on election night.

In Jefferson, former city councilwoman Dawn Maddox held a one-vote edge on incumbent Mayor Jon Howell for the mayoral race. The final tally Tuesday night showed Maddox with 1,278 votes and Howell with 1,277.

In Pendergrass, meanwhile, Tuesday’s final tally showed Kathryn Cooper Robinson edging out Terry May by a single ballot. Robinson had 82 votes with May having 81 at last count.

The Jackson County Elections and Registration Office is set to certify election results on Friday, with provisional ballots needing to be researched and counted, if eligible, by then.
