*The FIFA World Cup is coming to Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, bringing eight matches and fan events that are expected to boost tourism in the area. However, Georgia’s Attorney General is warning that the event could also attract criminal activity, particularly human trafficking. WJBF reports Georgia ranks as the sixth riskiest state for human trafficking, and state officials are working to expand enforcement efforts to combat this issue. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, as trafficking often occurs near major events and transportation hubs.
*Following the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old woman by an ICE agent in Minneapolis protests erupted in several places around the country, including Atlanta. The outrage is over an incident that happened in a neighborhood during an enforcement operation when a federal agent opened fire on an American citizen, Renee Good. Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday that the shooting was justified, that Good tried to ram the agent with her car. But Atlanta Activist Addison Clapp sees it differently, telling Atlanta News First “it was a legal observer observing ICE carry out raids of terror.”
*Georgia lawmakers are looking at more ways to eradicate gangs all over the state. The Georgia Gangs Investigators Association recently reported an 80 percent rise in the number of gangs since 2018, now standing at 2,000 in total. It’s also believed that 65 percent of crimes in Georgia are linked to gangs. WJBF says Georgia leaders are now eying tougher penalties, expanding intervention programs and new smuggling tactics used by gang members.
