Huk Atoll Half Zip Hoodie: OHUB Review

I was looking for the perfect fishing shirt that works in both summer and fall weather. My dry-fit shirts are great when it’s hot, but when October comes around and the wind picks up on the water, they are just too thin.

I tested the Atoll during a redfish trip on Lake Pontchartrain. It handled everything from cool mornings to hot afternoons, boat spray, and even an unexpected run-in with a bleeding shark. After using it for several months in different conditions, this hoodie has earned a spot in the lineup of fishing shirts, especially in the fall.

Specs & Materials

The Atoll features ultra-lightweight, high-stretch synthetic fabric that strikes the perfect balance between breathability and substance. Unlike those paper-thin dry-fit shirts, this hoodie has some actual weight to it while still maintaining excellent moisture management.

The Huk Atoll Half Zip Hoodie uses an ultra-lightweight synthetic blend with moisture-wicking and antimicrobial treatments. It’s a long-sleeve pullover style with a half-zip construction for ventilation control and UPF 50+ sun protection. It’s available in multiple colors, ranging from S to 3XL, with a suggested retail price of $60.

The half-zip is what makes this shirt special. You can unzip it when you get hot or zip it up when the wind picks up, or that morning boat ride out to the first spot.

Fit & Comfort

The Atoll fits true to size with a sporty cut that doesn’t feel tight when you’re casting or fighting fish. The stretchy fabric moves with you, whether you’re reeling in a redfish or moving around the boat.  The sleeves stay in place when casting, and the body provides good coverage without being too baggy.

The material feels a bit thicker than regular dry-fit shirts, which is exactly what I wanted for fall fishing. It works well under a light jacket when it’s cold in the morning, and the stretch keeps you comfortable all day.

Rating: 9/10

The Atoll’s high-stretch fabric and athletic cut allow for unrestricted casting motion, with sleeves that stay in place throughout the entire swing

Breathability & Moisture Management

Although this shirt is thicker than typical summer fishing shirts, it still handles sweat remarkably well. During my trip to Lake Pontchartrain, I fished for several hours in changing conditions, and the shirt kept me comfortable. I never got that sticky, clammy feeling you sometimes get with thicker synthetic shirts.

The stretchy fabric appears to allow air to flow through, and the half-zip provides excellent temperature control. When the afternoon sun got intense, I could unzip partway to cool off, then zip back up when boat spray or wind hit.

Rating: 8/10

Warmth & Versatility

This is where the Atoll really stands out. It’s perfect for those in-between days when a summer dry-fit shirt isn’t warm enough, but a fleece or jacket is too much. The thicker material provides just enough warmth for windy fall days while still allowing for sufficient breathability for active fishing.

The half-zip makes this shirt way more useful. It changes this from a shirt you’d only wear in the fall to something you can use year-round as a layer. I can see wearing it under a jacket in winter or by itself on those perfect fall fishing days.

Rating: 10/10

Hood up for wind protection and sun coverage. The fit stays comfortable without feeling restrictive around the head

Durability & Construction

The real test of this shirt’s toughness came during my trip to Lake Pontchartrain. I caught a shark that bled all over my shirt, and I thought for sure it would be permanently stained. But when my wife washed it at home, the shirt came out completely clean with no blood stains at all.

This demonstrates the effectiveness of the stain-resistant fabric and odor-fighting treatment. The shirt feels well-made, with good stitching throughout. If it’s like other Huk performance hoodies, it should last through many fishing trips and washes.

Rating: 9/10

Sometimes gear tests itself in unexpected ways. This shark blood completely disappeared after washing, proving the Atoll’s impressive stain resistance

Odor Control & UV Protection

The odor-fighting treatment works great during long fishing trips. Even after a full day on the water handling fish and dealing with boat spray, the shirt doesn’t get that “fish smell” that some synthetic materials hold onto. The UPF 50+ rating provides serious sun protection, which is crucial for extended days targeting redfish on open water.

Rating: 9/10

Style & Everyday Use

The Atoll looks good without being too flashy. It’s clearly made for fishing, but doesn’t resemble tournament gear with numerous logos. The half-zip gives it a nicer look compared to regular pullover hoodies.

While I primarily use it for fishing, the clean design allows me to wear it around town or for other outdoor activities. They make it in several colors, so most people should find one they like.

Rating: 8/10

Value & Competition

At $60, the Atoll costs about the same as other premium fishing hoodies. Compared to similar shirts from brands like Sitka, Simms, or Patagonia, the Huk performs just as well but costs less. The sun protection, moisture control, and versatility make it worth the money.

It fills a specific need for that tricky fall season, and the quality showed when it passed the shark blood test. It’s not the cheapest fishing shirt you can buy, but the performance makes it worth the investment.

Rating: 8/10

Overall Rating

The Huk Atoll Half Zip Hoodie does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It’s the perfect shirt for late summer through early fall fishing. It provides just enough warmth for windy days while still allowing for comfortable breathing during active fishing.

This hoodie is ideal for anglers who fish in changing seasons, require flexible layering options, or want a single shirt that can adapt to various conditions throughout a fishing day. The shark blood incident alone earned it a permanent spot in my fishing gear.

Standout Features: Half-zip flexibility, perfect thickness for fall weather, amazing stain resistance

Minor Drawbacks: Only works for certain seasons, might be too warm for peak summer

Rating: 9/10

The Huk Atoll Half Zip Hoodie hits the sweet spot for fall fishing. It won’t replace your summer dry-fit shirts or winter fleeces, but it fills an important gap in between and does so with style, performance, and toughness that impressed even when put to the ultimate test.
