Hilary Duff‘s daughter is asking one age-old question that fans of A Cinderella Story have wondered for over 20 years.
During a sit-down with Vanity Fair, the actress and singer, 38, rewatched some of her most iconic scenes from her classic works. While looking at a particular moment in the film A Cinderella Story, where her character Sam was sharing a moment with Chad Michael Murray‘s Austin, Duff shared her 4-year-old daughter Mae’s reaction to one particular aspect of the storyline.
“My 4-year-old has watched this movie and also picked up on like, how could he not know it’s you in that mask? And I was like, ‘It’s the age-old question, honey,’ ” she said. “And she’s like, ‘But it’s you. You are right there. I don’t understand. How does he not know?’ I’m like, ‘I know.'”
Duff welcomed her first child, son Luca Cruz in 2012, with her then-husband Mike Comrie. Following their split, Duff began dating Koma. The pair married in 2019 and welcomed daughters Banks Violet in October 2018, Mae James in March 2021 and Townes in May 2024.
In August, Duff shared a picture of her son Luca, 13, before heading off for his first day as an 8th grader. The photo showed her son wearing a white polo and sweatpants, standing outside with his arms at his sides and keeping a straight face.
Commenting on her son’s teenage energy, the mom of four jokingly wrote in text over the photo, “8th graders won’t hold signs.”

Last February, Duff mixed some mischief in her Valentine’s Day post. The Lizzie McGuire alum posted several pictures and videos from throughout the years via Instagram Stories to celebrate the February holiday. Duff couldn’t help but add a little humor to the otherwise heartfelt message.
In several slides, she showed a seemingly normal celebration, with pictures of her daughters, Banks Violet and Mae, dressed in white, pink and red. The last image showed Mae having a meltdown because her balloon flew away.
“I can’t help it. I know I’m evil, but it makes me chuckle,” she wrote on a picture of her daughter’s balloon flying away. After she posted two more photos zooming in closer to her daughter’s face, before posting a selfie of herself with the text “Do I keep zooming ??” above it.
