Dry vegetation and low relative humidity will again increase fire danger conditions on this afternoon and evening across parts of north Georgia, including the Gainesville area,” according to the weather service. “Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, as fires could get out of control.

“Relative Humidities of 25 percent or less can be expected for 4 or more hours this afternoon into the evening. Winds will be east to southeast at 3 to 6 MPH.”

As the drought continues, the U.S. drought Monitor notes that close to 40 percent of the state is now at “extreme” drought levels including our area. That number was less than two percent at the beginning of the year.
