Hall commissioner plans motion to table proposed data center

One Hall County commissioner said he intends to motion to table a proposed rezoning that would allow for a data center on the southeast side of the county.

The proposed development would be on 119 acres of land on O’Kelly Road just off of Ga. 60/Candler Road south of Gainesville. The applicant, Project Turbo, is seeking to build three data center buildings totalling roughly 900-thousand square feet.

The proposal has received significant public pushback at previous public meetings and was previously tabled by commissioners on Oct. 23 to allow time for commissioners to visit the sites of similar data centers to assess impact.

The proposal was then set to be voted on on Dec. 11. However, at Monday’s Hall County Commission work session, District 3 Commissioner Gregg Poole, whose district the proposal is in, said he plans to again table it.

“I’m making a motion Thursday to table this to the second voting meeting in January,” Poole said.

Poole said Hall County Administrator Zach Propes has planned for commissioners during that time to attend a webinar hosted by the Associated County Commissioners of Georgia to learn more about data center sites.

“They went on a site visit in Virginia to a bunch of data centers, the ACCG did, and they’re having a webinar with concerns, what they found, fact-finding,” Poole said.

The Hall County Planning Commission had recommended earlier in the year to approve the rezoning with 10 conditions. Poole, however, said he wants to learn more about data centers before making a vote.

“Those conditions they’ve got, they don’t even know what they’re talking about,” Poole said. “Those conditions are bogus, because we don’t even know what we’re talking about yet.”
