Hall County Planning Commissioner Shannon Davidson has confirmed that he was the planning commissioner that witnessed the alleged illegal meeting between three other planning commissioners on Sept. 15.
The Planning Commission was suspended by the Hall County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 7, after a citizen filed a complaint alleging that three commissioners secretly met and conducted county business prior to a public meeting. The Planning Commission meeting without public notice would be a violation of Georgia’s Open Meetings Act.
In the initial complaint, the citizen reported that she had seen the three commissioners walk into a conference room, then asked a fourth commissioner to check in on the gathering. Davidson said on WDUN’s The Martha Zoller Show Tuesday that he was the commissioner that the citizens expressed concern to.
“I took it upon myself to go up and take a look,” Davidson said. “And, I did find exactly that. I immediately left, made a phone call to the chairman, David Gibbs… I said, you know, I’m 100% sure that this is not what’s supposed to be happening right now.”
Planning Commissioners are appointed, they are not elected officials. The Board of Commissioners has ordered for a third-party to investigate the matter.
Davidson is running for the Commission District 3 seat, currently held by Gregg Poole. He clarified that though he did witness the alleged gathering, he has never attended or been invited to a meeting that violates state law.
