Grocery stores are putting locks on meat products as the SNAP crisis looms. The food benefits will not be paid in November. According to the Department of Human Services due to the federal government shutdown SNAP benefits will not be available beginning November 1, 2025.

SNAP benefits are 100% federally and congressionally funded, and DHS disburses the benefits to eligible households. Households may continue to redeem benefits issued to their electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card prior to Nov. 1, 2025, at any SNAP authorized retailer. The suspension applies only to November 2025 benefit issuance to households and does not impact any prior benefits, and as such, the authorization or redemption of benefits at eligible retailers is not impacted.

CNN reports the US Department of Agriculture says it will not tap into its $6 billion contingency fund to cover food stamp benefits next month, according to an agency memo obtained by the network. That means that roughly 42 million Americans will not receive critical food assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in November, unless the agency shifts its position.
