A GoFundMe has been started to raise money for family members of the victims of Monday afternoon’s deadly crash on Interstate 85 in Jackson County.
Tony Alvarenga started the GoFundMe, which had raised just over $4,500 as of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 15. Alvarenga said the eight victims killed when their Dodge van was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer on the interstate near Commerce were his relatives.
“We are devastated. In these moments, there are truly no words to describe the pain that comes from the unexpected loss of our loved ones,” the GoFundMe post by Alvarenga said. “We are seeking assistance to cover the costs of their funeral services. All funds raised will go directly to the family to help with these expenses and any others incurred during this time. Any support is greatly appreciated.”
The Georgia State Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board is continuing to investigate the wreck, and the driver of the tractor-trailer that hit the van, Kane Aaron Hammock, age 33 of Gainesville, was arrested and charged with distracted driving, following too closely and a list of second-degree homicide by vehicle charges, along with a second-degree charge of feticide by vehicle. One of the eight people killed was reportedly a woman who may have been pregnant at the time.
