Girls basketball: Buford opens 8-6A with win; Branch falls in 8-4A opener

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Buford opened its Region 8-6A schedule with a dominating 80-59 win over Collins Hill on the road on Tuesday.

The Lady Wolves (5-1, 1-0 Region 8-6A) led just 18-15 after the first quarter and took a 35-26 into the half. They blew the game open with a huge third quarter, outscoring Collins Hill 29-15 for a 64-41 lead.

Lydia Ledford paced Buford with 26 points. E’miah Fields added 17 points, Jermani Mincey had 8 points, and Haley Ryczek, Ava Jones, and Ansley Kehren all chipped in with 7 points each for the Lady Wolves.

Kaleigh Haywood led Collins Hill with 29 points. Disaya Reed added 14 points for the Lady Eagles.

Buford next travels to Central Gwinnett on Friday.

The Lady Falcons dropped a close, back-and-forth game to the Lady Warriors to open up Region 8-4A play on Tuesday at home.

Flowery Branch (4-5, 0-1 Region 8-4A) started strong taking an 11-7 lead after the first quarter. But the defenses were tough the rest of the way.

The Lady Warriors held the Lady Falcons to just 15 points over the final three quarters. Walnut Grove would take an 18-16 lead at halftime but the Lady Falcons held the Lady Warriors to just 1 point in the third quarter to reclaim a 20-19 lead.

Walnut Grove used an 11-6 fourth quarter to rally for the win.

Kinley Hawkins led Branch with 8 points. Sidney Crouch and Grace Kotula each had 6 points for the Lady Falcons.

Flowery Branch next will travel to North Oconee on Friday.
