GHSA releases new regions; Hall County split again

THOMASTON, Ga. – The Georgia High School Association released region alignments for the 2026-28 school years on Monday, and some are very interesting.

For those wanting an all-Hall County region, you’ll have to wait until the next cycle. The GHSA split the five Class 4A Hall County schools into two regions. Of course, it’s nothing new, as the five have been split in Class 3A over the last two seasons.

The new Region 6-4A has Chestatee and North Hall housed with Dawson County, Gilmer, Pickens and White County. It’s similar to the current Region 6-3A but without Lumpkin County, which stayed in Class 3A, Greater Atlanta Christian, which was moved to Region 5-4A, and the addition of Gilmer.

The new Region 8-4A includes some familiar faces as well. The new addition to the region is East Jackson, which moved up from Class 2A. Hoschton, a new Jackson County school set to open in 2027, is also in the region along with Cherokee Bluff, East Hall, Monroe Area, Oconee County and West Hall.

Flowery Branch and Johnson, both of which lost their appeals to move down to Class 4A today, will play in Region 8-5A with Jefferson, East Forsyth, Madison County, North Oconee, and Winder-Barrow.

Meanwhile, in Class 6A, Gainesville is staying in Region 7 with Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Lanier, Milton, Mountain View, Riverwood and Roswell. Mountain View, Alpharetta and Riverwood are new additions to the region, as Seckinger moved to Class 7A and Chattahoochee stayed in Class 5A.

Not much changed for Buford as they’ll be in the new Region 8-7A with Central Gwinnett, Collins Hill, Dacula, Discovery, Mill Creek and newcomer Seckinger.

In the Forsyth County region (Region 6-7A), Alliance Academy and Innovation Academy, both of which do not play football, were placed in the region. North Atlanta moved to Region 4-7A.

Lumpkin County and Union County will play in the new Region 8-3A, along with Elbert County, Franklin County, Hart County, Hebron Christian, Stephens County, and non-football-playing Barrow.

In Class 2A, Athens Academy, Banks County, Commerce, Oglethorpe County, Prince Avenue Christian, Providence Christian and Rabun County will make up the new Region 8-2A.

Schools will now have the opportunity to appeal their region placement to the GHSA.
