Georgia to face Ole Miss/Tulane winner in Sugar Bowl

For the second year in a row, SEC champion Georgia will head to the Sugar Bowl in the quarterfinals of the college football playoff. This time the ’Dawgs will be facing the winner of a matchup between teams whose head coaches clearly thought they could do better elsewhere.

Tulane, coached by soon-to-be Florida coach Jon Sumrall, and Ole Miss (coached by Pete Golding and the other guys who didn’t leave Oxford for Baton Rouge with Lane Kiffin) will face off in the first round in a game played on December 20th at noon in Oxford. It’s a rematch of a September regular season matchup won by the Rebels 45-10.

The Fightin’ Pete Goldings are an early 17.5 point favorite over the Green Wave, who clinched the American Conference yesterday with a 34-21 victory over North Texas.

It’s arguably the best possible draw for the Bulldogs, facing a Group of 5 opponent with a staff and players who have one eye on their future options or an Ole Miss team that will be playing its first game under a new(ish) staff. Perhaps the only downside is doing so in New Orleans, literally across town from Tulane’s campus and an easy trip for a lot of Rebel fans. Still, as an old school Bulldog fan I still hew to the belief that you never complain about playing in the Sugar Bowl. It’s where SEC champions belong.

The Sugar Bowl will kick off at 8:00 pm eastern on New Year’s Day with coverage all across the ABC/Disney/ESPN family of networks.

Go ‘‘Dawgs!!!
