Is Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton a Heisman Trophy candidate?

According to Georgia coach Kirby Smart, the redshirt junior quarterback from Rabun County has all the characteristics.

“What I will say is that he embodies everything about that award: resiliency, character, and determination. All of those words that embody a Heisman Trophy winner, Gunner [Stockton] has it, and he’s done it on the biggest stages, in front of the biggest audiences, against some of the toughest competition at a really high level,” Smart said. “He’s playing well, and he’s playing to make the people around him better, and his value to our team is immense.”

SI.com has Stockton in the top five, actually ranked fourth behind Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, Ohio State’s Julian Sayin, and Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed.

Stockton has passed for 2,269 passing yards and 27 touchdowns (eight rushing) and only three interceptions. In comparison with the top 3, Reed has passed for 2,632 yards, 28 touchdowns (six rushing) and eight picks. Sayin has amassed 2,675 yards, 25 TDs and four interceptions, while Mendoza has tossed 2,641 yards, 35 TDs (five rushing) and five interceptions.

Mendoza is the clear favorite at -115 to win it. Meanwhile, Sayin (+225), Reed (+500), Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia (+2200) and Stockton at +2500.
