Georgia adds nation’s top player to 2028 class

Saturday night was a big night in Athens.

Sunday’s been kind of a banner day, too.

Kirby Smart and company picked up some huge recruiting news this afternoon when 247Sports’ top-rated player and top quarterback for the 2028 class, IMG Academy’s Jayden Wade, chose the Red and Black over essentially every college football program in America.

We try not to get terribly excited about underclassman recruiting in these parts, because frankly holding onto a sophomore recruit all the way through the recruiting process is a tall order. You may recall that Georgia already has a pledge from Jared Curtis, the top QB in the 2026 class. In the event that Curtis comes in to replace top NFL overall draft pick Gunner Stockton and secured the starting job, keeping a player like Wade, who could start as a freshman at a lot of schools, in the fold will prove tough. That’s to say nothing of the potential for coaching staff shakeups, and the exigencies of big money in the NIL area. Again, don’t count your chickens just yet, or buy your Jayden Wade #7 UGA jersey just yet.

But Wade’s commitment is indeed something to celebrate. The 6’3, 195 pound sophomore has quick release and a live arm and can make a lot of throws that a young QB just shouldn’t be able to make. He’s also a threat in the run game, with good acceleration and a willingness to take contact when necessary, or dish it out when appropriate.

Wade’s commitment is the first for the 2028 class, but he’s the kind of player who can serve as a bell cow for other big name recruits as we get closer to Signing Day after next (after next).

Go ‘Dawgs!!!
