Gainesville is expected to learn the fate of 35 football players suspended by the Georgia High School Association on Wednesday afternoon.
Gainesville has filed an injunction and temporary restraining order against the GHSA in the Superior Court of Hall County.
On Tuesday, the GHSA Board of Trustees upheld 35 of the 39 suspensions during the appeal hearing.
Gainesville immediately sought legal counsel after the BOT’s verdict and submitted the injunction and TRO to the Superior Court of Hall County on Wednesday, around noon.
Now, it’s in the hands of State Court Judge Clint Bearden. The hearing is set for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hall County Courthouse.
Meanwhile, in the 27-page court document obtained by AccessWDUN Sports, Gainesville argues that the GHSA violated its own Constitution and by-laws and ignored Georgia law on self-defense.
They are asking the court to issue a temporary restraining order against the GHSA from enforcing the suspension of the 34 players, issue a preliminary injunction blocking the GHSA from enforcing the penalties for the rest of the playoffs, declare the GHSA’s sportsmanship rules null and void as a result of the GHSA’s failure to recognize the rights to self defense, and allow Gainesville to play the next playoff round with a full roster.
The fight happened with 1:57 to go in the third quarter of the Brunswick-Gainesville Class 5A playoff game at Glynn County Stadium on Nov. 21. Gainesville was up, 42-0.
In the videos circulating on various social media platforms, the altercation on the field seems to begin when a Brunswick player ripped the helmets off two Gainesville players, then punched one. Also in the video, another Brunswick player sprints from one end of the field to the 50-yard line and runs through a Gainesville player. That’s when both sidelines began to rush the field. Coaches and players are seen on video trying to break up the fight on the field.
Gainesville will travel to No. 1 Langston-Hughes on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A playoffs. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
