State Senator Greg Dolezal is joining a growing Republican primary for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia next year.

Dolezal has served as a senator for District 27, which covers most of Forsyth County, since 2019.

During his tenure, he authored and passed the Riley Gaines Act to “keep men out of girls’ sports,” and the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act, which allows eligible students and parents to receive $6,500 in credits to go to a private school or homeschooling option if they are in the attendance zone of a public school in the bottom 25-percent of performing schools.

He also says he “led the fight” against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her criminal investigation into President Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to influence Georgia election officials.

In his announcement video posted to X, he railed against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies.

“I’ll eliminate every DEI program in every government agency in Georgia,” Dolezal said. “Taxpayers shouldn’t have to fund divisive and unconstitutional policies.”

He also said he would “stop DEI mandates in schools.”

It is important to note Dolezal already voted “yes” to House Bill 127 that passed this year that increased the number of sick leave days for teachers from three to five.

Tucked into that bill, however, was wording that already effectively eliminated DEI at the public school level.

“No local education agency or postsecondary institution shall promote, support, or maintain any programs or activities that advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion,” the bill reads.

The legislation specifically called out “any effort to promote” terms such as “implicit bias,” “cultural appropriation,” “allyship,” “gender ideology or theory,” “microaggressions,” “Antiracism,” “systemic oppression,” among other related terms. If any postsecondary education violates this, they would be subject to withholding of state funding.

Dolezal joins a crowded Republican primary that includes State Senator for District 51 Steve Gooch that covers Dawson, Lumpkin, Pickens, Gilmer, Gannin, and Union Counties, as well as part of White County.

State Representative for District 100 that covers north Gwinnett and Buford David Clark has also announced. State Senator for District 18 John F. Kennedy has also announced, along with former candidate for Secretary of State and U.S. Marine Brenda Nelson-Porter, State Senator for District 19 Blake Tillery, Takosha Swan, and Jerry Timbs in the Republican primary.

As for the Democrats, State Senator for District 14 Josh McLaurin is the only one who has announced as of the writing of this article.

The primaries are slated for May 19 of next year.
